Quick answer

Spotlightr is the pick if you sell courses and want encrypted, branded video with gating, quizzes and analytics built in, for less than Wistia charges.

### Where Spotlightr fits

In its own words, Spotlightr is "Secure, branded video hosting for courses and marketing funnels.". We read its own product and pricing pages and what long-term users report, then judge it on one question: does it help the video make the sale?

#### What Spotlightr actually is

Spotlightr is a video host built around one job: putting a protected, branded player on a page you own and getting something back from it. You upload a file, it encrypts and transcodes it, and you get an embed code and a branded watch page. Around that sit the parts an online-course business actually needs. Encryption against downloads, gated access, in-video calls to action, quizzes, and viewer analytics. It is run by a small company, Zimmplify LLC, and positions itself as the host that supports your courses, your marketing funnels and your budget.

It is not a direct-response VSL player, and it does not pitch itself as one. It has CTAs and lead capture, but its centre of gravity is protecting and selling course content, not wringing a cold sales video on paid traffic for every last conversion. Read it as a host for courses and funnels that undercuts Wistia, not as a head-on Vidalytics rival.

#### Security is the headline, and it is real

The feature Spotlightr leads with is HLS encryption on every upload. Each file is encoded and protected with what the vendor calls polymorphic access tokens, which stops the one-click browser-extension downloads that strip video off a normal embed. On top of that you get domain-locked embeds, so a clip only plays on domains you approve, plus password protection, private share links, one-time plays, and a dynamic IP watermark that animates the viewer's own IP address over the footage to deter screen recording. GeoControl, which limits playback to chosen countries, sits on the higher tiers.

If your worry is that a paid course leaks the day after launch, this is the strongest reason on the list to look at Spotlightr. Encryption is on by default on every plan, not held back for an enterprise tier, which is not true of every host it competes with.

#### The selling and course layer

Where Spotlightr earns its marketing half is the part you can bolt onto a video without a second tool. Clickable CTAs and more than 20 overlay templates, in-video lead-capture forms, and email, SMS or passcode gates that make a viewer identify themselves before they watch. A Stripe integration puts a paywall on a single clip or a whole gallery, so a webinar replay or a masterclass can charge at the door from the same dashboard.

The course side is genuine but light. From the Plus plan up you get a course builder and a gallery, with access options from open to opt-in to paid. Premium adds in-video quizzes with progress tracking and detailed student profiles. It reads, as one Reddit commenter put it, as LMS light: enough to deliver and protect a paid course, not a full platform with community, certificates, assignments and checkout. If you run your training on WordPress and LearnDash, the free plugin and the LearnDash integration are the reason a lot of people land here.

Two smaller touches matter more than they sound. Every upload keeps an evergreen link and embed code, so you can swap the underlying file after a reshoot without breaking embeds or losing analytics. And hybrid hosting means you can point Spotlightr's player at a file you host elsewhere, including a YouTube or Amazon S3 URL, and still get the branded, ad-free player and the tracking.

#### What it costs and how it meters

Pricing is plan-based with a bandwidth allowance, not pure pay-as-you-go, with no permanent free plan, only a 14-day trial and no card. On annual billing the tiers run Light at $13 a month, Plus at $21, Premium at $55 and Scale at $163; monthly billing is higher on each. Light gives you 50 GB of storage, 200 GB of monthly traffic and room for 25 videos. Plus removes the upload limit and adds the course and gallery builders. Premium is where quizzes, CRM tags, tracking codes and five team seats appear. Scale is the same feature set with a 6,000 GB allowance and 20 seats.

The number to model is bandwidth. It counts what viewers actually stream, so a popular public clip costs more than a gated lesson of the same size, and going over the monthly allowance bills at $0.05 per GB, with extra storage at $0.03 per GB. For a library with a few hundred students that is a rounding error. For a high-traffic public embed it is worth doing the sum first, and creators pushing terabytes a month often find raw delivery cheaper on a CDN like Bunny. No hard spend cap exists, so set usage alerts if your videos are public.

#### The reliability question

This is where an honest review slows down. The everyday product is well liked. Capterra shows 4.8 out of 5 across roughly 52 reviews and rates customer service 4.8; G2 sits at 4.3 across about 29\. The praise is consistent: responsive support and, for most people, smooth playback. One Capterra reviewer's summary of it as having no buffering and no glitches is the common experience.

The caution is that the sample is small and the sharpest complaints are about what happens when it breaks. Trustpilot carries only a couple of reviews, one of them a 2025 report of downtime from time to time with slow notification. Spotlightr's own status page logged brief database and API load issues in mid-September 2026 and a video-migration slowdown days earlier. None of that is disqualifying for most course businesses, but the public record is not deep enough to promise enterprise-grade uptime, and the vendor's own figure of 99.99 percent over eight years is a claim, not an audited number. If a few hours of embed downtime would sink a launch, pilot it and keep a fallback host ready.

#### The interface: friendly to most, scattered to some

The other recurring note is the dashboard. Plenty of reviews call it a user-friendly interface; a real strand of others say settings are hard to find and, on G2, that advanced options are a little hidden, with one Capterra reviewer going as far as a confusing and terrible user experience. The complaint is discoverability, not missing features. Spotlightr does a lot, and finding the specific toggle you want can take longer than it should. Budget an afternoon to learn where things live before you judge it.

#### Where it fits, and where it does not

Spotlightr fits a course creator or marketer who wants encrypted, branded playback with gating, quizzes and analytics in one place, for less than Wistia charges, and who runs on a WordPress or course-builder stack rather than a developer one. The security is the real draw, the WordPress and LearnDash path is smooth, and the price at the bottom is genuinely modest.

It fits badly if the video's whole job is to sell on cold paid traffic. There is no per-second retention curve split by buyers and non-buyers, no sound-first autoplay tuned for a sales letter, and nothing that ties a play to a cart-verified sale and posts that conversion back to the ad platforms. Spotlightr will host and gate that video well; it will not tell you why it converted. For a direct-response funnel you would run a conversion player like Vidalytics on top, and for a full learning platform with community and certificates you would want a dedicated LMS. On the shelf it belongs to, mid-priced protected video hosting, it is a capable option held back mainly by a thin reliability record.

##### What works

* HLS encryption, domain locking, password protection and a dynamic IP watermark are on by default, so your course is genuinely hard to rip, and the basics are not gated behind an enterprise tier.
* The selling layer is built in: in-video CTAs, email and SMS gating, lead forms and a Stripe paywall for pay-per-view, plus a free WordPress and LearnDash integration a lot of course creators buy it for.
* Cheap at the bottom. Light is $13/mo on annual billing with encryption included, well under Wistia, and every video keeps an evergreen embed you can update without losing views or analytics.
* Support is the most-praised thing about it: Capterra rates customer service 4.8, and smooth, glitch-free playback is the common experience.

##### What to watch

* The public review base is small and the sharpest complaints are about downtime and slow notification when it happens, so uptime is not independently proven at scale. Pilot it and keep a fallback host ready.
* The dashboard divides people. Several reviewers find settings hard to find and advanced options buried, so expect a learning curve even when the feature you want is present.
* It is course-and-marketing hosting, not a conversion-first VSL player, so it lacks buyers-versus-non-buyers retention and cart-verified sale attribution, and a cold-traffic sales video still needs a conversion player on top.
* Bandwidth is metered with overage at $0.05 per GB and no hard spend cap, so a popular public video can run up a bill; high-traffic creators often find raw CDN delivery cheaper.

#### What users actually say about Spotlightr

Research: unverified

##### Support is the most praised thing about it ↑ frequently praised

Across Capterra (4.8 from about 52 reviews) and G2 (4.3 from about 29), the recurring positive is responsive, helpful support and, for most users, an easy-to-use player. Capterra rates customer service 4.8.

> “User friendly interface, unbeatable support.”

##### The interface splits people: friendly to some, scattered to others

Many find it user-friendly, but a real strand of reviews describes settings that are hard to find and advanced options buried, up to one Capterra reviewer calling it a confusing experience. Discoverability, not capability, is the complaint.

##### Playback is usually smooth, but reliability proof is thin and downtime happens

Most users report smooth, glitch-free playback. But the public review base is small, and the sharpest negative is an outage report on Trustpilot; Spotlightr's own status page logged brief database and migration slowdowns in September 2026\. Good on average, worth planning a fallback around.
